Location

The proposed site for the wind turbines is shown in the map below and consists of 42 hectares of mainly cleared farming land. The current farming activities will continue unchanged once the wind farm is built and operating.

Expert assessments indicate that the site is very suitable for a small wind farm because it has:

  • Undisturbed wind flow with strong, consistent wind speeds;
  • Good setbacks from urban residences, tourist attractions and major roadways;
  • Terrain primarily used for grazing and cropping, therefore minimal impact on flora or fauna;
  • Proximity to the electrical grid;
  • Easy access to the site.

Proposed Development

Expert analysis has confirmed that the site will support a wind farm of three wind turbines with a total capacity of approximately 6 megawatts (MW). We plan to install turbines with a tower height of approximately 80m, and a blade length of 50m. The turbines will be separated from each other by at least 400m and access tracks and underground cables will be laid between them. It is planned that the wind farm will connect via underground cables in to the existing 22 kV power line running along the Ballan–Greendale Rd. The total construction cost is estimated at some $18m, and the working life of the wind farm is expected to be 25 years.
